The secret to playing this one is to play it even more slowly than you think you should: reset your internal turntable from 45 rpm to 33 and 1/3.
Now, given how much this song has been a staple of our set for more than a decade, I’m surprised that I can so far only find one recording — audio or video — from among all of our live shows, rehearsals, scratch tracks, etc.
I debuted it solo in Sheboygan, Wisconsin at the Christmas luncheon of the American Association of Retired Persons in 2010. But the following recording is from almost as early in the song’s life, as the Orchestra played it on October 1, 2011 at that year’s PRF Auktoberfyst held at the Klas restaurant in Cicero, Illinois. (Don’t look for it, it’s not there anymore.) We all still sound a little uncertain of ourselves in it, but Edward just nails the suitcase-clasp opening ending.
